Whether simple, elaborate or quirky, décor is an integral part of weddings. Be it at the ceremony venue, at the homes of the bride and groom or at the location of the wedding banquet, appropriate decorations set the stage and ambience for a wedding.

One need not burn a hole in one’s pocket for wedding décor. There are options, and these would include :

  • DIY. Only possible for some small décor items that can be created ahead of the wedding.
  • Getting help. Artistically inclined family and friends can take the helm.
  • Hire professionals. Discuss budgets and agree on expectations. Then leave it in the hands of the experts.

Working with a wedding decorator would be wise if :

  • The couple has allocated a reasonable budget for décor.
  • There is a wedding theme to adhere to.
  • The venues are simple and austere.

When negotiating with your banquet venue, be sure to find out the following :

  • What decorative items come with the package?
  • Do they have an appointed external decorator whom you have to use or can you bring in your own decorator?
  • Are there any restrictions on what can be done and what not?
  • Is there a refundable indemnity deposit that has to be paid should you decide to use your own decorator?

One development to take note of is that a number of wedding decorators are also now offering items for rent. In this sense, you could therefore possible combine the ‘DIY’ and ‘getting help’ routes with that of ‘hiring professionals’. Some of the items available for rent would include :

  • Table linen.
  • Napkins.
  • Chair covers.
  • Ribbons and other embellishments for chairs.
  • Flatware.
  • Stemware.
  • Centrepieces.
