For the majority of couples, having wedding invitations done will involve either going the custom-designed route or selecting pre-designed cards from a catalogue. Others fall in between these two extremes, for example, making minor changes to a particular design. Still, there are others who may decide to DIY, either because of budget constraints or for the sake of personalisation. Whichever route you decide, be sure to start early.

Start early because :

  • There are lots of readily available designs to pore over.
  • You need time to decide if you’d like to go with a pre-designed invite and modify, or whether you’d like one that is designed from scratch.
  • You may need to get parents’ views on the design and more importantly the wording.
  • You will need to consider the types of paper available – colours, textures, finishes etc.
  • Amendments and corrections may be required once you have viewed the first draft.
  • Proof reading carefully is crucial as once you sign-off and the invites are printed, the cost of any necessary re-prints due to errors which you may have missed will have to be borne by you.
  • The stationer requires lead time to get printing done.
  • You need to put aside some time to address the invites and thereafter either hand deliver them or post them.
  • A rush job is seldom satisfactory.
