A Fairytale Wedding On Borneo

Destination weddings are becoming increasingly trendy, particularly among the worldly, urban and cosmopolitan-minded set. Whilst the Asia Pacific region offers many exotic locales for memorable weddings, our homeland too offers locations that are no less exotic, and that are equally, if not even more captivating.

Closer to the peninsula, Penang, Langkawi and Pangkor have established themselves as pretty popular destinations. One resort in Sabah that can give these islands in West Malaysia a run for their money is Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort in Kota Kinabalu. Situated on gloriously beautiful Pantai Dalit, cradled between forested hills and 3 kms of pristine beach, and surrounded by hundreds of acres of lush tropical vegetation, this resort is arguably unparalleled as a breathtakingly romantic wedding venue in Borneo.

Their signature thatch-roofed Wedding Pavilion, set against a backdrop of the South China Sea, is indeed a spectacular site that evokes a sense of elegant romanticism and enchantment. That aside, perhaps its greatest selling point is its 'guaranteed privacy' policy - the resort has made it a point to accept bookings for only 1 wedding per day at its pavilion. This level of exclusivity will certainly go down well with today's sophisticated couples. Another plus is the resort's resident wedding planner who will take care of all the details, right from the initial planning stages to the successful conclusion of the day's events. Several banqueting options, be it a grand banquet in the ballroom, a BBQ on the beach or perhaps an intimate wedding party in one of its 2 Gazebos - private dining pavilions right on the beach - coupled with the level of professional service and organisational expertise expected of a Shangri-La property, definitely makes Rasa Ria Resort a worthy venue for consideration.

When planning for a destination wedding, do contemplate the following :

  • Make travel arrangements early.

  • Send out invites well in advance, especially to family, relatives and close friends whom you would like to attend.

  • Work closely with the wedding planner at your chosen resort, and trust him/her as he/she will be your dedicated event planner.

  • Go through details thoroughly with your wedding planner, particularly on your likes, dislikes, what you expect and what the resort is able to provide.

  • If time permits, it is always wise to visit the resort for a recce and meet the people whom you will be placing your trust in, prior to making a booking and paying a deposit.
